This delivery of UEE20120 ‘Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems’ is fully funded by the Victorian Government through Solar Victoria’s Electrification Skills Program, a $5 million investment in subsidised training initiatives over three years.

About split system and air con heat pump training

UEE20120 ‘Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems’ is nationally recognised and completing it will allow you to apply for a Refrigerant Handling Licence through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).

This training builds on the skill sets of plumbers, gasfitters and electricians to increase safety and compliance outcomes for consumers.

Up to 200 fully funded places are available until end June 2027, or until the funding is exhausted, through:

• TAFE Gippsland in Morwell
• Box Hill TAFE in Box Hill
• Energy Training Group in Epping
• Volt Edge in Thomastown

The course is delivered through blended formats that include face-to-face learning for the practical components and assessments.

These places are funded through our Electrification Skills Program which supports the Victorian Government’s climate action ambitions and gas substitution reforms. These include reducing carbon emissions, phasing out natural gas connections, and transitioning to home electrification.

Check if you are eligible

To be eligible you must be at least one of the following:

• a licensed electrician holding a current electrical work licence
• a qualified plumber or gas fitter interested with recognition of prior learning for the units below
• a fourth-year apprentice who has successfully completed the units of competency below and has at least two years of industry experience
• for non-electrical workers – recognition of prior learning for the units below may offered if you have a trade qualification in plumbing/gas fitting.

Recognition of prior learning units:

• UEECD0007 Apply Occupational Health and Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
• UEECD0019 Fabricate, assemble and dismantle utilities industry components
• UEECD0020 Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
• UEECD0051 Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
• UEECD0016 Document and apply measures to control WHS risks associated with electrotechnology work
• UEERE0001 Apply environmentally and sustainable procedures in the energy sector
• UEERL0001 Attach cords and plugs to electrical equipment for connection to a single phase 230 Volt supply
• UEERA0035 Establish the basic operating conditions of air conditioning system

What you will learn

Completing this course will build your competencies to install, commission and decommission single head, split air conditioning and heat pumps systems to a prescribed routine where the maximum plant capacity for each system does not exceed 18 kilowatt (kW) refrigeration.

This includes wall hung, floor and ceiling suspended, cassette and ducted fan coil split systems and water heating heat pump systems.

This qualification excludes competencies required for service, repair, maintenance, diagnostic/fault finding and electrical work or the safe and proper installation of commercial refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump plant and equipment.

Units of competency:

• UEERA0059 Prepare and connect refrigerant tubing and fittings
• UEERA0049 Install and start up single head split air conditioning and water heating heat pump systems
• UEERA0064 Recover, pressure test, evacuate, charge and leak test refrigerants – split systems
• UEECD0027 Participate in development and follow a personal competency development plan
