Uptake of electric vehicles (EVs) continues to grow, with more than 110,000 EVs now on Victorian roads. The Victorian Government is supporting this transition by investing in the rollout of EV charging infrastructure across the state.

Jobs related to EV charging infrastructure projected to quadruple to 14,300 workers across Victoria. The accredited 22609VIC Course in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure up to 22kW and non-accredited Electric Vehicle Charging Essentials and Introduction to Electric Vehicle Charging in Strata course are helping to build the skilled workforce needed to support growing demand.

Limited places are fully funded by the Victorian Government through Solar Victoria's Electrification Skills Program, a $5 million investment in subsidised training initiatives over three years.

The Electrification Skills Program supports the Victorian Government’s climate action ambitions and gas substitution reforms. These include reducing carbon emissions, phasing out natural gas connections, and transitioning to home electrification.

About EV charger design and installation training

22609VIC Course in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure up to 22kW

This accredited course will provide electricians and fourth-year apprentices with the skills and knowledge required to safely design, install, test and commission EV charging infrastructure.

Up to 110 fully funded places are available until end June 2027, or until the funding is exhausted, through:

  • TAFE Gippsland in Morwell
  • Holmesglen Institute of TAFE in Moorabbin

This is a blended learning course with one full day on campus, and some self-paced online study prior to attendance to help electrical workers build skills in EV charging technology and installation design.

Electric Vehicle Charging Essentials and Introduction to Electric Vehicle Charging in Strata

These two non-accredited courses are offered to electricians and fourth year apprentices and cover key technologies, regulations and installation considerations for residential, commercial and strata settings.

Up to 140 fully funded places are available until end-June 2027, or until the funding is exhausted, through:

  • NECA Education & Careers at their Carlton and Dandenong campuses

The courses combine trainer-led presentations, interactive discussions, peer-to-peer learning activities, and practical scenario-based learning to ensure participants can apply knowledge in real-world contexts.

Student eligibility is strictly limited to those who meet and can provide evidence of meeting the relevant course pre-requisites including licensing requirements where relevant.

To be eligible you must be at least one of the following:

  • a licensed electrician holding a current electrical work licence.
  • a fourth-year apprentice who has experience in installing, testing, and commissioning low voltage electrical installations

What you will learn

22609VIC Course in Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure up to 22kW

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • design EV charging infrastructure installations up to 22kW
  • install, test and commission EV charging equipment in accordance with Australian Standards
  • assess site suitability, electrical supply capacity and equipment selection
  • apply regulatory requirements, WHS practices and industry best practice
  • undertake fault finding, testing, labelling, and commissioning activities

This course covers ten key topics:

  • Role of the electrician: Understanding opportunities in the EV transition
  • EV technology: Vehicle types, components, and charging requirements
  • Power and energy fundamentals: Essential concepts for customer communication
  • Energy economics: Connecting home energy systems with EV charging
  • Market trends: EV uptake patterns and future demand
  • Myth-busting: Addressing common EV misconceptions
  • Charging hardware: Equipment selection and specifications
  • Standards and regulations: AS/NZS 3000, AS/NZS 3008, and compliance requirements
  • Installation design: Maximum demand determination and circuit design
  • Future technologies: Emerging developments in EV infrastructure

Introduction to Electric Vehicle Charging in Strata

This course covers six key topic areas:

  • EV charging project planning in strata environments
  • Electricity on-selling considerations
  • Maximum demand and load management
  • NCC2022 requirements
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Installation scoping considerations

Content is contextualised to strata-based EV charging installations up to 7kW, including multiple installation scenarios across shared car parking environments, ensuring alignment with current industry practices and participant job roles within the evolving EV sector.
