Millsom family of Coburg embrace Solar Homes Program

Music and magpies

Rachael Millsom (RM): “Yeah we found out about the Solar Homes program through a friend actually, it was always on my mind to get solar panels but you know it’s a big expense so when a friend found out I went online and actually went oh quick, better put an application in.”

Alison Caldwell (AC): Since January this year the Millsom family have watched their energy bills plummet thanks to the 12 solar panels installed on the roof of their home in Coburg in Melbourne’s north. Rachael showing me the app on her phone “This is like today…”

AC: Rachael tracks their energy consumption each day on an app on her phone.
RM: “The Green is the solar production blue is the energy I’ve used directly from the solar panels and red is the consumption that’s not been used so the production today has been 14.37 kilowatts so far

RM: “I had a look at the data today actually and we’re generally making every month that we’ve had it and we got the solar panels in January and so that includes the last month we’ve actually made more power than we use”

AC: Before the solar panels, the Millsoms spent $4 a day on energy, today they spend just $2 a day.
But it’s not just the financial savings the Millsom’s are after.

RM: As energy prices increase it’s definitely worth saving money but it’s definitely been for environmental reasons it’s like a little a vote saying green energy, renewables over here! Sound of Daniel and Jack kicking ball around.

AC: 11 year old Daniel and his 9 year old brother Jack share a love of soccer but it’s the environment they treasure above all.
Daniel Millsom: I was like ok that sounds great good for the environment// because I kind of live off it, if it goes I go
AC: For the first time the Solar Homes Rebate will also be available to renters and landlords.

RM “I think that’s really great because there are people who are in the rental market who would like to be able to do the same thing, to say yes to renewables too, who haven’t been able to do that at this point, so I think it’s great.”

AC: In response to overwhelming public demand, the Solar Homes Initiative will support the installation of more than 650,000 solar PV systems for home owners over the coming decade with a dedicated number of new rebates offered each month.
If you miss out one month, then just make sure you do your homework and have your documentation ready for the next offer at the start of the following month.
Like the Millsoms, more than 32,000 households are already saving on their electricity bills through the Solar Homes program, while also doing their part to tackle climate change and create new jobs in the solar industry.

RM: I think it’s about just living a different way and reducing energy bills and supporting jobs of the future for you know that people can have jobs in renewals instead of fossil fuels you know. It’s nice for a consumer to say we’ve got some power to choose our own power
