Birri pathways in renewable energy

Opportunities for First Nations young people to build connections in renewable energy and learn about pathways to employment.

This pathways program for First Nations young people is funded by the Victorian Government and delivered by Birri Beginnings through Solar Victoria’s Electrification Skills Program, a $5 million investment in free training initiatives over three years.

About Birri Pathways in Renewable Energy

Birri Pathways in Renewable Energy is designed to give First Nations young people real world exposure to roles in clean energy, helping them make informed decisions about further study, training or employment.

Clean energy offers a wide range of career opportunities, including:

  • electrical and plumbing trades
  • apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships
  • construction, installation and maintenance roles
  • administrative, coordination and technical support roles
  • engineering and project management pathways.

Birri Pathways in Renewable Energy is funded until 30 June 2027 to provide early pathway exposure for senior secondary students, as well as practical job readiness and placement support for job seekers.

It is flexible and participant centred, recognising that people move at different paces and face different opportunities and barriers. The program is delivered through Aboriginal organisation Birri Beginnings and will prioritise:

  • cultural and identity connection
  • mentoring and trusted relationships
  • workplace exposure in real industry settings
  • individualised pathway planning
  • ongoing support into employment or further study.

This program supports First Nations young people to achieve their goals, and supports the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s commitment to Pupangarli Marnmarnepu 'Owning Our Future’ Aboriginal Self-Determination Reform Strategy.
